I saw Mr Sundaram after 3 months of extremely painful sciatica. His examination was quick and thorough and he immediately referred me for X-ray and MRI, which showed a large disc prolapse. He offered me nerve injection or surgery. I chose surgery and I’m glad I did as 8 weeks later I’m cycling again and have lifted some weights as part of my physio. Mr Sundaram has a very relaxed style but gets the facts across well. He communicates in a down to earth way.

Mr Sundaram treats his patients with respect and openness.. providing clear advice and options and then, as in my case, excellent surgical skills with a tricky lumbar fusion operation. I highly commend him as a surgeon, consultant and as a medic.

After 5 years of various medications and physio, the condition in my lower back continued to deteriorate to the point where l became wheelchair bound and in extreme, debilitating pain. At my first meeting with Mr Sundaram he discussed my X-ray and mri scan and fully explained his diagnosis of my condition. I was shocked by the severity of my back condition, but he was very patient and understanding, explaining the procedure for an operation and all the risks involved, including the need for rods and screws to be fitted. I needed time to absorb this information. The damage to my spine, shown on the scan and X-ray were quite frankly upsetting. He sensed this and we arranged for another meeting. At no time did l feel pressured into making any decisions. By the time of our next meeting l had already decided on an operation due to my worsening condition. Mr Sundaram still fully explained all the procedures and possible complications, but l had every faith that he would do his best for me. On the day of my operation l saw Mr Sundaram before my operation where he again checked that l was still willing for the operation to go ahead. I understand that it was a long and complicated procedure, but l feel it has-been a complete success with a dramatic improvement in the quality of my life. The pain from before the operation had gone and some 6 weeks later l am able to walk over a mile. l have no hesitation in recommending Mr Sundaram, as he is a caring, gifted and brilliant surgeon.

This is just a few lines to give a heart felt thank-you to Mr Sundaram for the surgery he did on my spine, having two discs slipped and trapping my spinal cord I was unable to walk and in a lot of discomfort, the options were not that good. Mr Sundaram was very understanding and his bedside manner was brilliant, he took a lot of care to find the exact area which was causing the problem which gave me a lot of confidence and explained very clearly what the operation involved, needless to say the operation was a success, and I am now walking again. Mr Sundaram even called my wife late in the evening once the operation was over to let her know the outcome which was much appreciated. During my life, I have met with a few surgeons, all I can say Mr Sundaram goes to the top of the list. Roger Toogood aged 72

My operation on the 20th of October 2020 at Gloucetershire Royal Hospital has been remarkably succesful and the benefits were virtually immediate. Over the previous eighteen months I had been suffering on and off with pain and lack of movement in my left leg. MRI scans confirmed that the problems were in fact with the vertebrae in the lumbar region and revealed a bulge that required L4/5 L5/S1 decompression and discectomy surgical intervention. Mr.Rathnam Sundaram was due to operate on my spine in January 2020 at Cheltenham Nuffield Hospital. However, the symptoms mysteriously disappeared, but then reappeared again with a vengence only a few weeks later. In 2015 I had in fact very similar problems with my right leg, where Mr Sundaram performed a decompression and discectomy procedure with the same wonderful result. Mr. Sundaram is an excellent surgeon who expalins the risks and benefits at all stages in a caring manner.

Quality Assurance
